Discover the natural beauty and wildlife of one of central Spain´s hidden secrets. In this walking holiday you will have the chance to visit the future National Park of Guadarrama as well as the Duratón Canyon Regional Nature Reserve. The tour begins with a visit to Segovia city, World Heritage Site, to discover its famous Roman Aqueduct and stunning Cathedral and Castle. Then three days of gentle walks along drove roads and country lanes of extraordinary beauty, staying at three charming rural hotels near the mountains of Guadarrama. A highlight here will be the medieval town of Pedraza where you will spend one night. Later you will be transferred to the Duratón Canyon Nature Reserve for two more days walking along the river and on top of the cliffs forming this spectacular canyon.

Itineraries

Day 1

Arrival to Segovia

Arrival to the ancient city of Segovia situated in the heart of central Spain. Your hotel is situated in the Plaza Mayor, the heart of the pedestrianized historic center.

Day 2

City tour of Segovia

Segovia was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. Today you have a chance to explore its many historic jewels like the towering Roman Aqueduct, a veritable marvel of ancient civil engineering. Take time to enjoy a chilled glass of wine in the exquisite 'Plaza Mayor' while contemplating the magnificent cathedral, then take a stroll to the fairy tale, ornate Alcazar, where queen Isabel sent Christopher Columbus on his exploration of the Americas.

Day 3

Riverside walk to Valsain 10 - 17 km + 390 m

A short transfer will leave you in the beautiful village of La Granja de San Ildefonso. From here you start a hiking trail following the course of the Eresma River between oak trees until you reach the mountain village of Valsaín where you can enjoy a meal or picnic before continuing to enter the wonderful Pinar that makes this place known.

Day 4

Circular walk to El Chorro waterfall 10.5 km + 464 m

Today you will come upon the refreshing pools of the 'El Chorro' waterfall as you pass through the oak and pine woodland on the slopes of Peñalara. You can combine your walk with a visit to the magnificent palace of San Ildefonso, surrounded by grand gardens and ornate fountains, and the interesting glass-making exhibition and museum, well worth a visit.

Day 5

Walk along the foothills 15 km + 420 m

Today's transfer takes you to Pradena to walk along ancient drover's tracks taking you through sweet-scented juniper forests to the traditional little mountain village of Gallegos.

Day 6

Walk amongst sunflower fields towards Sepulveda 16 km + 420 m

From the foothills of the mountain we move you to the moor and the plain approaching the Duraton Canyon. You will follow a GR (long-haul trails) through fields of sunflowers and cereals and passing through the canyon of the Caslilla River until you reach the medieval city of Sepúlveda.

Day 7

Circular walk Duraton Canyon 16 km + 383 m

Your final walk is along the peaceful riverside of the Duraton Canyon Natural Park. Spiraling above you, you will see circling birds of prey which nest on the limestone cliffs either side of the river. A special permit will give you privileged access to this protected area.
