Low Water Season: June to November.  At this time the climate is drier and the low water levels attract creatures that can hardly be seen in the rainy season.  The water level of the rivers falls during this period, exposing surprising sandy beaches. And ideal time to stroll through the forest and discover the Amazon flora and fauna. Ideal for travelers who want to discover the Amazon’s flora and fauna by walking through the rainforest.

High Water Season: December to May.  This time of year is marked by rains and storms.  It is in these months when most plants bloom or bear fruit, creating a unique show.  Birds and primates are attracted by this spectacle and can be seen on the banks of the river. Ideal for travelers who prefer exploring the Amazon and its tributaries by boat rather than walking.

La Perla - Spanish for the Pearl - is one of the latest comfort cruise options for guests heading to the Peruvian Amazon, and despite its name, is a great, affordable, cost-effective option. Leave the modern world behind you and begin a journey of discovery into one of the world's most remote regions. Built to be as comfortable as possible, while still offering a perfect interaction with nature, the Perla's shallow draught allows visits to locations inaccessible to many other boats. The outboard powered skiffs that she carries are used for trips in lagoons, narrow channels, creeks and flooded forest. The Perla vessel was once a missionary medical boat, now swapping the religious path for that of tourism, and offers quirky accommodation with great service for an Amazon River vessel in the comfort class.

Itineraries

LOW WATER SEASON

Day 1

Iquitos - Nauta – San Joaquin de Omaguas – Yacapana Island

Upon arrival at the airport, we will be waiting for you to take you to the DoubleTree by Hilton Iquitos hotel where you will receive the first orientation talk on the adventure you are about to begin. Then, we will head in a private vehicle to the city of Nauta, the historical fluvial port where we will be boarding.

Day 2

Amazon River – Yarapa Agua Negra - Ucayali River

At dawn, we will take a boat and head to the banks of the Amazon River where we will observe the beautiful Amazon birds that fill the bushy treetops: parrots, macaws among many others. We will also see sloths (lazy bears), iguanas and monkeys. A true natural scenery of colour and life in the heart of the rainforest.

Day 3

Ucayali River - Maranon River – Origin of the Amazon (confluence) – San Jose de Zarapanga (Casual)

The early morning hours have a special feeling to connect ourselves with the rainforest and they are a unique opportunity for sighting species. On this third morning, we have programmed for you a boat outing before breakfast. The destination is once again the confluence of Ucayali and Maranon Rivers. We will navigate the area until we find the perfect spot for piranha fishing, those famous river fish with razor sharp teeth. To make the moment more special, we will use the traditional equipment and techniques typical of the area.

Day 4

Pacaya Samiria National Reserve - Maranon River – Nauta City – Nauta Creek

This morning begins with a breakfast aboard, and gets more exciting with a visit to the city of Nauta, the second most important in the region. Upon arrival, we will take a fun tour on a “mototaxi” (the most popular means of transportation in the Peruvian rainforest cities) all the way to the city’s market where you will be able to interact with picturesque characters and discover the region’s specific commercial route. Once there, we will visit the typical food stalls, the handcrafts stalls, the aphrodisiac drink stalls and many more. A true immersion in the life of the Amazon inhabitants.

Day 5

Pacaya Samiria National Reserve - Maranon River – Yanayacu de Pucate – San Regis – Amazon Natural Park

In the morning, we will organize a fun picnic breakfast on the Yanayacu de Pucate River, one of the most protected and preserved areas of Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. This area is usually visited by pink dolphins and is ideal for small boats, so we will put kayaks at your disposal so you can live the experience of rowing in one of the most beautiful aquatic ecosystems in the world. Also, if you want, you can enjoy a refreshing dip in the river.

Day 6

Pacaya Samiria National Reserve – San Jose de Zarapanga – Shiriyacu – Pacaya Samiria National Reserve – Puerto Prado

We will start off this morning with breakfast and then head on a boat expedition to our destination on the Shiriyacu River stream. Once there we will look for the perfect spot for piranha fishing. We will use local equipment and local techniques. Back in the ship, we will have a lecture on techniques and tools for geographic orientation in the rainforest. If you prefer, you can take a rest until lunch time.

Day 7

Nauta - Iquitos

After the buffet breakfast aboard, we will proceed to disembark in Nauta and head to Iquitos. Along the way, we will visit the Amazon Rescue Center (CREA), where biologists and volunteers take care of the animals that have been saved from illegal trafficking including the beloved manatees and the aquatic mammals, dangerously threatened by hunters. Here, you will find the species that have been rescued by the authorities and which are in the process of reintegration into their natural environment. Here you can also learn more about their traits, the risks they face (deterioration of their habitats and wildlife trafficking) and best of all, you can play around with them since they are very friendly. After this emotional and unforgettable experience, we will continue our way to Iquitos where, once we get to the airport, our journey will have concluded.
