Northern Peru is a perfect place to explore if you want to go off the beaten path in Peru. It has so much to offer and it has its own set of amazing highlights and several archaeological sites due to the many pre-Inca civilizations. Explore another more authentic site of Peru, and don’t miss out the amazing landscapes, the nature and the cultural diversity in this part of the country. End the tour in Cusco with visit to Machu Picchu.

Itineraries

Day 1

Arrival in Lima

Arrival to Lima in the evening. At arrival, walk to the airport hotel, Costa Del Sol Ramada in front of the airport, where you will spend the night before heading to Jaen the next morning.

Day 2

Lima – Jaen – Cocachimba

Morning flight to Jaen. Arrival at the airport in Jaen, pick up and transfer to hotel Gocta Lodge.

Day 3

Cocachimba – Gocta Waterfall – Karajia

Morning tour to Gocta waterfalls. This is a beautiful three hour walk to the base of the third highest waterfall in the world. It is possible to rent a horse for the tour, but it needs to be arranged with the guide the day before. In the afternoon visit the Karajia pre-Inca ruins. Return to Gotcha Lodge.

Day 4

Kuelap & Tingo

Morning departure and transfer through charming villages, such as New Tingo and Choctamal, to the base of Kuelap. Here we will continue to the entrance to the fortress of Kuelap, which is a stone citadel build by the Chachapoya culture around 800 AD. It is located at 3000 meters above sea level and covers about six hectares. Inside the fortress you may see 420 circular buildings decorated with rhombus and zigzag shaped friezes, a place of great significance to the Chachapoyas. From here, you can either hike down to New Tingo (three hour hike – to be arranged beforehand with the guide) or the car will take you same way down. Back to your hotel in Tingo.

Day 5

Revash – Leymebamba

Early morning excursion to the mausoleums of Revash, nestled in surprising and inaccessible mountains. The trip continues with a visit to Leymebamba and the archaeological and ethnographic Leymebamba museum. It exhibits 219 mummies and objects found in the lagoon of the Condors as well as textiles pottery and weapons discovered in the zone, recovered in 1997 from the Lake of the Condors. Overnight in Leymebamba.

Day 6

Leymebamba – Cajamarca

After breakfast, morning travel by private transportation to Cajamarca through impressive landscapes. Arrival in Cajamarca, free afternoon.

Day 7

Cajamarca – Cumbemayo & Cajamarca city tour. Travel to Chiclayo

Morning visit to pre-Inca Cumbemayo archaeological site. Here you will find a thin river construction, which might be the oldest manmade structures in South America. Afterwards back to the city center of Cajamarca. Here we will visit the most interesting and important places such as: The Main Square (La Plaza de Armas), San Francisco Church, The Rescue Room, Belen, and the Santa Apolonia Sanctuary. Afternoon (optional, not included) visit to the famous Inca baths, are natural hot springs located five kilometers east of Cajamarca. In the afternoon transfer to bus station. Night bus to Chiclayo.

Day 8

Chiclayo

Arrival in Chiclayo in the morning. Transfer to the hotel. Free day for own plans. Chiclayo is also called “The Pearl of North”. It is a very interesting city, founded near important “Wari” Ruins and it’s a very pleasant town with great gastronomic offers.

Day 9

Chiclayo – Trujillo

Full day private tour, visiting some of the most interesting spots in Chiclayo and surroundings such as: Tucume, Huaca Rajada, Brunning Museum and Tumbas Reales del señor de Sipan museum. In the afternoon, transfer to the bus station and travel to Trujillo.

Day 10

Trujillo: Full day City Tour

Private full day tour to Huaca del Sol y la Luna, Chan Chan and Huanchaco. Chan Chan, the greatest mud city of the world, extends over an area of 18 square km. It was declared Cultural Patrimony of Mankind by UNESCO. Today only one of its nine old palaces are visited. The “Templo de la Luna” (the Moon Temple) shows beautiful murals in high relief with mythological designs. The “Templo del Sol” (the Sun Temple) is the highest adobe temple of America. Lunch in Huanchaco (on own account), a beautiful beach town, notable for its surf breaks and its “caballitos de totora”, and its ceviche.

Day 11

Trujillo – Lima – Cusco

Transfer to the airport in Lima and flight to Cusco via Lima. Arrival in Cusco and transfer to the hotel. Free afternoon for acclimatizing to the altitude of Cusco city.

Day 12

City Tour in Cusco

Discover Cusco and the surroundings by a half day private city tour including a visit to Qorikancha (Sun temple) and the Inca Ruins in the outskirts of Cusco: Sacsayhuamana, Qenqo, Puca pucara and Tambomachay. Afternoon free to enjoy Cusco town.

Day 13

Cusco – Pisac – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes

The Sacred Valley of the Incas contains many famous and beautiful Inca ruins. It was called the Sacred Valley because it contains some of the best land in the region and was not a part of the Empire but the property of the Emperor or Inca himself. On this private day tour, we will visit Pisac Inca Ruins, Pisac Indian Market, Urubamba valley and the impressive ruins in Ollantaytambo. Afternoon transfer by expedition train to Aguas Calientes.

Day 14

Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

Early morning transfer to the local bus station, transfer by public bus to Machu Picchu. Full day tour Machu Picchu. Then you will have free time to explore on your own Machu Picchu. Afternoon train back to Ollantaytambo train station. From here private transfer to your hotel in Cusco.

Day 15

Cusco – Lima – Home

Transfer to Cusco airport, flight to Lima. At your arrival in Lima transfer to the international departures to check in. Return home
