This is a tour which mixes culture with trekking through the Boyaca and Santander departments of Colombia, situated on the eastern Andes mountain range. During this tour you will visit two of the most beautiful villages of Colombia: Villa de Leyva and Barichara. You will trek in the Flora and Fauna Santuary of Iguaque and on the historical stoned paths in Santander.
Itineraries
Day 1
Arrival in Bogotá
Welcome at the El Dorado airport by our bilingual guide. Transfer to your hotel in Bogota.
Day 2
Bogotá – City Tour
City tour in Bogota which will take about six hours. First you will visit the famous Paloquemao food market in the center of Bogota. Here you will get familiarized with all the different types of fruit Colombia has to offer. Later you will continue to Monserrate Mountain by cable car. The church located on the top of this mountain stands at 3,000 meters above sea level. Our tour will continue around the historical center of the city called La Candelaria. The most important sights to be visited are: the main square called “La Plaza de Bolivar”, the Gold Museum, the Botero Museum and “Chorro de Quevedo” Square – the place where Bogota was founded. Return to hotel at end of tour.
Day 3
Villa de Leyva
After breakfast in the hotel, you will drive to Villa de Leyva. The drive takes about 3.5 hours (160 km). Villa de Leyva is one of the most picturesque towns of Colombia; it is famous for its colonial architecture and the cobbled streets. The town was founded in 1572. Furthermore, Villa de Leyva has become a cultural and artistic center for different festivals. In the afternoon you will do a small walking tour around this beautiful town and will not miss the visit to the Fosil and Ecce Home Monastery. Overnight stay in Villa de Leyva.
Day 4
Flora and Fauna Sanctuary of Iguaque 9 km 7 hours
Early in the morning you will drive for about 40 minutes in order to reach the Flora and Fauna Sanctuary in Iguaque. Today be prepared for a full
day hike to the Iguaque Lake. We will ascend from 2,800 meters to 3,400 meters above sea level. This is a great opportunity to become familiarized with the ‘paramo’ ecosystem which can be found only in few South American countries.
Day 5
Day hike to the Yataro Waterfall and transfer to Barichara 2 hours (both ways)
We will pack our bags and head to the Gachantiva municipality in order to visit the hidden waterfall called “Yataro”. It reaches about 60 meters and forms a natural swimming pool where you can take a refreshing swim. Later we will continue to the small town of Barichara (the drive takes between 4 and hours depending on the traffic). Barichara is known for its traditional architecture called “tapia pisada” and often is called one of the most beautiful towns of Colombia. Overnight in Barichara.
Day 6
Guane Hike 5 km
First thing in the morning we will take the famous stoned trail form Barichara to Guane. The walk is about five kilometers long and takes about two hours. In Guane we will visit the local museum where we can learn about the Guane Indians. Return back to Barichara by car. After lunch and some rest, we will continue visiting the most remarkable places of Barichara. We should not miss the workshop of “Fique Paper”. Overnight in Barichara.
Day 7
Chicamocha Canyon Hike 16 km
Today we will head from Barichara to the town of Villanueva (about 30 minutes). From Villanueva we will continue for another 30 minutes by car until we reach the starting point of our hike (1,500 meters). This is another stone trail which will take you deep down the Chicamocha Canyon to the small village of Jordan (450 meters), which lies on the banks of the Chicamocha River. From Jordan you will continue hiking uphill to the town of Mesa de los Santos (1,290 meters) which lies on the other side of the canyon. During this hike you will be able to appreciate the beauty of the Chicamocha Canyon from a different angle. It is important to note that the hike is quite difficult due to the hot weather. After the hike you will be transferred by car to the Hacienda El Roble for a well-deserved rest.
Day 8
Coffee Tour
You will have the morning free in order to recover from the previous day. In the afternoon you will do a coffee tours in the farm in order to learn about the coffee growing and preparation process. Overnight in Hacienda El Roble. For those who do not need rest, it is possible to do an additional activity (should be arranged in advance).
Day 9
Departure
Transfer from the Hacienda El Roble, in Mesa de los Santos region, to the airport in Bucharamanga.
