Route Profile: Easy. This is a tour that has combined activities – bike ride, walking tour, hiking, horseback ride and kayaking – all activities require good physical conditioning but they can be adapted to more or less demanding according to group requirements.

Itineraries

Day 1

Colonia Del Sacramento

Arrival to Colonia Del Sacramento Port or Bus Station and transfer to your hotel. During the morning, meet your local guide for a walking tour along the cobbled streets of the old town of “Colonia Del Sacramento”. Visit the Spanish and Portuguese Museums and the most important tourist spots of this Old Portuguese City form the XVII century that has been declared Patrimony of Mankind by the UNESCO. Enjoy a traditional “Mate” tasting and discover the most popular drink in Uruguay. During the afternoon, enjoy a bike ride along the riverside Rambla. Immerse in the rural region of Colonia surrounded by vineyards, olive plantations and lemon trees. Finish your ride at Finca La Primavera with an olive oil tasting. Bike or drive back to town.

Day 2

Colonia Del Sacramento - Montevideo

After breakfast, transfer to the bus terminal of Colonia to board the regular bus to Montevideo. On arrival, transfer to your hotel. After check in, transfer to the lively port market to enjoy lunch. Meet your local guide at the restaurant and enjoy a walking tour of the Old City. The tour begins at the port market with a visit to the Carnival Museum to discover the Spanish & African roots of our carnival and learn about the “Murgas” & “Candombe”. If you are in Uruguay during Carnival season (late February or early March) you could even participate in one of the “Tablados”, “Candombe rehearsals” or “Llamadas Parade”. Continue onto the Museum of Pre Columbian Art (Mapi) before arriving to the Constitution Square, the Cathedral and Cabildo. We will walk along the pedestrian area towards the Torres Garcia Art Museum, one of the most renowned art schools in Uruguay and then visit the Solis Theatre for a visit. Montevideo used to be surrounded by a wall to protect the first settlers of the capital. We will cross the Gate of the Old city and finish at the Independence Square where the statue of our national hero “Jose Gervasio Artigas”, guards his mausoleum next to the iconic “Palacio Salvo”. (If you prefer, today we can change this walking tour for a bike tour in the city).

Day 3

Montevideo - La Pedrera

After breakfast, enjoy a morning tour of modern Montevideo including an exclusive visit to the studio of local drums Luthier Fernando “Lobo” Núñez, who will share with us all the secrets of the local carnival rhythm known as “Candombe”. This music has become a defining feature of Uruguay’s national identity and Lobo has found special acclaim since being visited by Mick Jagger in 2016 for his worldwide reputation with drums. Afternoon transfer to the bus station to board a regular bus to Rocha, La Pedrera. On arrival, transfer to Brisas de la Pedrera Boutique Hotel.

Day 4

La Pedrera - Cabo Polonio - La Pedrera

After breakfast, meet your local guide who will guide you to the small village of Barra de Valizas. Enjoy a barefoot trek along the coastline and the incredible shifting sand dunes. Climb the “Buena Vista Hill” and appreciate the gorgeous view of the ocean before continuing to Cabo Polonio (3 hours trek). After a delicious lunch at a local seaside restaurant, visit the lighthouse and sea lions reserve (one of the largest in South America!). Afternoon 4x4 truck drive to the main entrance of Cabo Polonio. Transfer back to the small town of La Pedrera.

Day 5

La Pedrera - Estancia Anastasio

After breakfast, transfer to the bus station to board your bus to the town of San Carlos. On arrival, transfer to Estancia Anastasio, an amazing traditional ranch located on the shores of the Anastasio Lagoon. After check in, enjoy a typical “asado lunch” followed by a scenic horseback ride to explore the estancia’s surroundings. The large area of wetlands constitute a perfect spot for birdwatching as the area is teeming with bird life (more than 400 species), otters, nandues (American rheas) and capybaras. Dinner and accommodation at the estancia.

Day 6

Town of Garzon

After breakfast, meet your local guide and drive to the small town of Pueblo Garzon where your two hour hike to the Garzon Winery will begin. On arrival, enjoy a tasting of these amazing wines followed by lunch overlooking the vineyards. Drive back to the estancia. Dinner and accommodation at the estancia.

Day 7

La Barra

Experience a day tour in the area of José Ignacio: choose between kayaking and biking depending on your interests. Includes picnic lunch. In the afternoon, enjoy a regular tour of Punta del Este visiting Casapueblo and the most important attractions.

Day 8

La Barra

After breakfast, enjoy a full day on your own to explore the area and go to the beach.

Day 9

La Barra - Montevideo

After breakfast, transfer to Montevideo hotel or Carrasco Airport for departing flight
